Chapter Eight
Her heart pounded in her chest, and she was painfully aware of her surroundings as she strolled into the castle with Jadus on her side. It felt just like walking into a battle, and in a way thatâs exactly what she was doing. As to strolling in, that was courtesy of an illusion spell Sebastian had laid on her, which would expire shortly.
Sheâd taken on the semblance of a baroness that hardly ever showed up in the capital, and the baroness preferred to stay out of the shark infested waters of the palace. The only chance for her to be caught out, was if this day was one of the few times a year she was actually already here, then the guards might take notice there were two Baroness Margareteâs present.
Of course, that normally wouldnât work to sneak in. No doubt Court Wizard Hamal had sensed her presence before sheâd entered the city proper, and he also wouldâve picked up Sebastianâs magic spell before she got through the castle gate, through the wards if nothing else.
But Hamal was her limited ally in this, and he was allowing her approach without giving outcry, so she could demand a trial by truth spell. A demand that the law would support even over the kingâs wishes. When the law was drawn up, it was done so under the assumption that anyone demanding to be put under the truth spell and be questioned, would be innocent. It was a law to prevent sending the wrong person to prison or to the gibbet.
There was some risk to the plan, and her life was on the line.
Though it would clear her of past charges and convictions by illustrating her innocence, she would also during the testimony throw her brother under the wagon wheels. She truly believed in her heart and gut her brother was guilty, otherwise when the time came, she would be unable to make those accusations under truth spell.
But her subjective truth may not represent reality.
False accusations made against the crown in an official manner during court was treason, and punishable by death. If by some miracle the preponderance of circumstantial evidence turned out to be wrong, and her brother wasnât guilty of regicide and treason, then Hamal would have no choice but to overwhelm her magic and hold her there.
Sheâd be cleared of the old charges but be judged treasonous by those accusations.
Sheâd be executed shortly after for a crime she would be guilty of. Thatâs why people were very careful about making accusations against the king or another noble without evidence to back it up. At least, in official ways. It wasnât a crime at all, to speculate in private.
So yes, she felt like she was going into battle, and her life was on the line. She trusted Sebastian, and also agreed with him given the strength of the circumstantial evidence, but it was an act of bravery to go through with the plan.
She disciplined her thoughts as they entered the throne room.
